You need to patch up any holes in the wall too. You may need to consider tiling your  wall in a pattern of which there are many patterns.

You may choose to start laying tiles from center of the wall toward the edges and corners or from one corner across the wall. You need to use a tape measure to determine center of the wall. Proceed to lay out tiles along the floor at the lower end of the wall giving room for grout lines. Doing so should make it possible for you to determine how many tiles will cover width of the wall. You may need to mark out locations on the wall where you plan to install a cabinet or any other accessory so that such locations are left bare.

Proceed to spread the adhesive using the trowel on the wall. Position a support strip across the wall. Start placing tiles with the support strip acting as a guide so that the tiles align along a straight line. You need to set tiles permanently in place using the hammer once you have completed a row or a section.

The last important step on how to tile wall is in trimming any tiles that appear to be non-aligned before setting them in place permanently. Proceed to remove the support strip before sealing all joints with silicone caulk. It may become necessary to cut holes into a tile or several tiles for one reason or another.
